Gun control has become a hot button issue here in America recently after several shootings, including Sandy Hook which happened only a few months ago, and a few others that have happened since then. Do we ban certain types of guns or do we arm everyone? That seems to be the big question.
Before I get into this, I want to be clear that I am not on either side. I don't support banning ceretain types of guns, and I do not support arming every citizen.
First of all, banning guns of any kind is not going to truly solve America's overall violence problem. If you intend on hurting or killing someone, you will use whatever you have at your disposal to accomplish that goal. Gun violence is only part of a symptom that points to a much larger problem, which I will get to very shortly.
Second, arming all citizens is also not a good solution. More guns will not equal less violence. It just increases the risk of more shootings, and could result in even more victims in one shooting. People can, and likely will, be caught in the cross fire of a wild-west style gun fight.
Neither of these suggestions recognize the larger issue, that our society, in general, has emotional issues. We're paranoid, we're afraid of everything, we have anger management issues, and we're becoming more and more divided and isolated from one another. I'm not saying that every single one of us has these problems, but many people in our society do. I personally think it has to do with a number of things. I think gun control is not a true solution, because gun control will only bring a slight decrease in violence at best, and gun violence is not the only type of violence there is. Don't get me wrong, I think we do need gun regulations, but I don't think we should fool ourselves into thinking that it is the absolute solution to all violence in America.
I'm going to cut this short and encourage you to watch the latest episode of "Culture In Decline". It covers this issue very well, I think, and makes many great, but widely ignored points regarding violence in America, and does so in a humorous and satirical tone. Enjoy!
